Leinster 40x20 Championship
Junior B Doubles 1st Round
Thursday 14th January, Ballymore Eustace, Co.Kildare

Eugene O'Reilly/Peter Flanagan (Meath) dft Mick Donovan/Ronan Green (Wexford) 21-8, 21-10.

The Crossakiel/Kells partnership of Eugene O’Reilly and Peter Flanagan started off this year’s Leinster 40x20 doubles championship with a good win in Ballymore Eustace against Wexford pairing Mick Donovan and Ronan Green from the Barntown Handball Club, located just outside Wexford town.

The Wexford pair scored the first ace of the game to go 1-0 up, but Meath then took control and once they regained the serve they then went into the lead and dominated the first game thanks to some fine serving from Flanagan. The first game finished 21-8 in favour of Meath duo.

The second game started off slow for the Meath pair, going 5-0 down but they regained their composure and reeled in the scores to level at 5-5. From then on, this game was a much tighter affair with neither side seemingly able to find any rhythm, but then the Meath lads started to show their class. With the scores tied at 10-10 Wexford went in to serve, but with a well placed defensive shot deep into the left corner from O’Reilly and then a nice kill from him to the front right the Meath men regained the serve without dropping a single ace. This passage of play seemed to spur them on and they closed out the second game 21-10 to take the match.

Historic wins for Gary Reilly & Sarah McDermott

Historic wins for Reilly & McDermott
For the first time in over 20 years the Crossakiel Handball Club held a Juvenile one-wall handball competition for boys & girls at Under-14 level on Sunday December 27th last.
Just 6 weeks ago the club reformed with renewed hope and vigour. There was some fantastic handball fare in evidence. Gary Reilly & Ricky Dermott both qualified for the Boys singles final with inspired wins over James Baugh & Eoghan McCabe respectively. In the final itself Gary Reilly wearing the Celtic jersey tore into Ricky McDermott in the opening exchanges. From a 5-4 lead Gary Reilly the Crossakiel Celt took complete control. And the skills on show by both players had to be seen to be believed considering these players only starting playing handball 4 weeks ago. Already Head Coach Eugene O’Reilly is doing a fantastic job in coaching the club’s young players. Gary Reilly extended his lead with pin point serving and added to some sublime aces to McDermott’s left and right side. McDermott never gave up trying but Reilly’s extra class told as he raced to an impressive 21-5 win.
There was consolation for the McDermott’s when Ricky’s sister Sarah won the girls competition winning impressively in the round robin finale. Eugene O’Reilly presented the winners & runners-up with their prizes. More competitions for the club’s younger members will take place in the next number of months.
James Baugh, Johnny Reilly, Jack Tunney, Hugh McCaffrey, Eoghan McCabe, Thomas Briody, Deborah McCabe, Aoife Tunney, Sarah McDermott, Gary Reilly & Ricky McDermott all participated in the Christmas competition.

We hope to have the club website up and running in the next 2-3 weeks and will be adding lots of old photos of the open court, players etc and adding some articles. The Club colours will be black/white and red. In the old days the playing shirts was black and white while in more recent years it changed to red and white the parish colours of Ballinlough GFC. Following a recent meeting it was agreed to change the colours back to the original club colour and still having red in it. Merging of the old and new playing shirts together.
